Domestic Tree Surgery FAQ's
Why should I hire a qualified arborist?
When you hire a professional to complete work of any nature on your property, it’s paramount that the contractor holds the required qualifications to complete all work to the required standard.
H-W Tree Surgeons hold all essential qualifications and have the required experience to complete work to the very highest standard – and safely.
H-W Tree Surgeons has more than 20 years’ experience and have expansive knowledge of arboriculture practice. Each professional tree surgeon we employ is accredited in all areas of tree surgery and grounds keeping, including chemical spraying, waste management and the use of mechanical power-driven tools, such as chainsaws.
How can I tell if my tree is hazardous?
There are a handful of common defects with trees that make them hazardous. These can include the following, and if spotted it’s advised to get the opinion of a tree surgeon.
- Decayed wood or evident cavities embedded in the tree trunk or in major branches
- Cracks or splits in the trunk or at the union where the bases attach
- Mushrooms present at the base of the tree
- Unstable tree trunk
- Electrical line adjacent to the tree
It is the responsibility of the property owner to ensure that the trees on their property are free from any potential hazards. In the event that a tree has been identified as hazardous, H-W Tree Surgeons can provide a written report with recommendations of how to rectify the situation.
When is the best time of year to call an arborist?
Typically, it’s recommended that trees requiring surgery are examined when not in bloom (the autumn and winter.) This, however, is not true for all species, and the reason why H-W Tree Surgeons will always complete a full examination on your behalf prior to undertaking any work.
Prunus species (cherry and plum trees) require attention, and pruning if required, soon after flowering to reduce the risk of bacterial infection. Maple and birch trees should not be pruned in the spring to avoid sap exuding from the tree. Magnolia and walnut trees should only be pruned in high summer. Most common hedges can be pruned all year round, however if you’re unsure over the effects of undertaking any work to a species, always consult the opinion of a tree surgeon.
Do mature trees need more care and attention?
Regular care and attention to mature trees will promote health longevity. This is sound practice and preventative –something that will cost less in the long run. Not only that, attention from a professional tree surgeon will reduce the severity of any potential disease and any environmental problems that may occur. Our experienced tree surgeons will examine the leaves, buds, branch health and the overall condition of the crown and trunk. Crown die back (gradual death of the top of the tree) and decay are often symptoms of longstanding problems. These can be remedied by the attention of a skilful arborist.
